Many things can impact whether a person becomes an addict or not. For instance, you might have a genetic proclivity if many other individuals in your family have also struggled with alcohol or drugs. You may also point to a troubled childhood or some other traumatic events in your life as reasons why you started self-medicating with chemicals.

If you’re struggling with alcohol or drugs, you can look into addiction treatment in San Diego or anywhere else around the country where you live. You can always find excellent facilities with caring staff members who can assist you in getting your life back on track.

It may also interest you to know, though, that certain personality types are more prone to drug addiction and abuse than others. This can play just as significant a role as the other factors we’ve mentioned. We’ll talk more about that in the following article.

Low Impulse Control

Some individuals are impetuous. These people can be a lot of fun to be around. You never know what idea they’re going to come up with next. It’s hard to be bored around someone who always has great ideas for things to do.

However, these individuals also usually have less impulse control than other people. This devil-may-care attitude can make them more susceptible to drug and alcohol addiction. It can make it harder for them to say no.

A Desire to Try New Things

There are other people who are adventurous. Like impetuous individuals, it can thrill you to be around such people. They might have no issues with skydiving, base jumping, or rock climbing. They can usually pull up many pictures of themselves doing crazy things on their phones to show you if you ask.

The desire to try new things and to have unusual experiences can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, though. If someone has a hard time turning down a new adventure, that can easily spread from less dangerous drugs to harder ones that almost always lead to addiction.

Hedonists

Some people will do virtually anything that makes them feel good. Hedonism is the term that’s usually used to describe these individuals.

Someone who doesn’t mind doing anything that releases endorphins probably is not going to spend a lot of time mulling over whether trying drugs is the best thing for them. They likely won’t think about the possible consequences at all. They just want to feel good in the moment, and they don’t bother contemplating the ramifications of their actions.

What Kind of People Are Less Inclined to Have Addiction Problems?

There are people who are less likely to have addiction problems as well. These are the individuals who are cautious or have other priorities, like their families or careers.

Such individuals might not always seem like the most fun to be around, but their prudence has its advantages. If you are one of the personality types we’ve mentioned, be careful with the choices you make, as addiction might be in your future.
