Music is a big part of any wedding, so it’s worth taking the time to consider your choices carefully. Hiring a live band is a brilliant way to get everyone up and dancing, and it offers a unique and personalised experience that is sure to impress. However, there are some key things to remember when creating your playlist.

Naturally, everyone’s music tastes are different, but when you’re looking to crowd please, it can be helpful to have a good mix of genres and songs playing. Although whichever band you choose will have a style that they specialise in, many wedding bands are able to be quite versatile and can often provide covers of popular songs. So, what’s the best music for your wedding band to cover? Here, we take a look.

Sentimental tracks

First and foremost, your wedding band should be able to play your favourite songs that are sentimental to you and your partner. From the song that tells your love story, to the one that was playing when you first met, these special songs are perfect for your first dance and to kick-start your reception.

You could also choose tracks that remind you of your younger years, that were popular when you began dating, or those which hold special meanings for yourselves and your closest friends and family. Be sure to discuss your requests with your chosen band in plenty of time, to give them the chance to practise and perfect your tunes.

Crowd pleasers

As the evening progresses, your wedding guests are likely to head to the dance floor. Opt for energetic, well known classics to get everyone singing along. Party favourites and songs with dance routines are always a hit at any wedding. Go for upbeat, traditional party songs to ensure your guests have the chance to dance the night away.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also arrange a karaoke-style session with your band and encourage them to allow your guests to sing along during these popular songs. You could also ask your guests to request a song along with their RSVPs, and give the list to your band ahead of time for a perfectly personalised playlist.

Background music

There will be times during the reception where you’ll need the music to die down a little, and of course periods where your band will need a short break. As people gather for evening food, or when other special moments such as sparklers or fireworks are going on, talk to your band about whether or not they can provide any background music.

It can kill the mood to jump into silence during these times, so ask for some gentle music to play until the party kicks off again. Whether your band plays solo instruments in turn, or you use a speaker to play some songs off your phone, it’s best to plan for this before the night.

Make it your own

When creating the soundtrack for your wedding, think about which music would help make this important day even more memorable. And whilst it’s good to have some tracks that everyone will be able to sing and dance along too, ultimately the music you choose should prioritise you and your partner’s preferences.
