Things to Do Before Putting on That Fabulous New Wig

Whether you’re an old pro at wearing wigs or you’re just starting on this journey, it’s always a good idea to go over some to-dos that will help make the whole experience of wig-wearing more enjoyable for you. Before you put on one of those gorgeous black human hair wigs, take some time to protect and prepare your natural hair.
#1 – Wash your hair
The most basic but also the single most important thing you can do before wearing a wig is to wash your hair. If your scalp is sweaty or there’s product buildup on it, this can cause itchiness or, worse, dandruff. Put a wig on top of that, and you could end up causing more problems for your scalp’s health in the long run. So, don’t go more than a week without cleaning out your scalp and hair with some hydrating shampoo. Follow this up with a conditioner that will help to moisturize and detangle your hair. If you intend to wear a wig for long periods, then you should also consider getting a deep conditioning treatment.
#2 – Dry your hair
Make sure that your hair is completely dry before putting on your wig. If your hair is still damp underneath it, this can cause scalp issues by creating a breeding ground for bacteria. You can either air-dry your hair or use a blow dryer with a cold air setting.
#3 – Moisturize your hair
Curly or coily hair needs more hydration, so apply either a leave-in moisturizer or a conditioner after drying your hair. Seal in all this hydration with either a light oil or hair serum.
#4 – Braid your hair
You don’t want knots of hair to poke through your wig and make your head look lumpy. Braid your natural hair into tiny twists or cornrows so you can maintain your hair in a stretched position that will help your wig settle more naturally on your head. This protective style will also help you later on when you take a break from wigs and detangle your hair.
#5 – Protect your hair
Wear a breathable wig cap to keep your natural hair and the wig separate so you can keep your hair clean, reduce friction, prevent breakage, and create a smooth surface for your wig to rest on. Make sure your wig cap matches your skin tone so you can enjoy a more natural look.
#6 – Secure your hair
For any stray hairs or loose strands, use either clips or bobby pins to keep them in place. This will make sure you’ll have a flat and smooth base for the wig.
Finally, pay close attention to how your hair feels, especially if you use wigs for long periods of time. If you experience any discomfort like itching, then take a break from wearing your wig and resolve any scalp issues before wearing it again.
