Winter holidays are here, yay! If you are planning a holiday to a country with four seasons, the weather may turn quite cold as expected. This is the perfect moment to introduce the family, especially toddlers, about the weather and snow. However, taking your kid on holiday during winter is not that easy, especially if your child is still a baby.

Taking a baby on holiday to a faraway place, especially with the weather that is different from your home country’s, might be quite difficult. As a mother, you need to check all the preparations, so you can focus on taking care of the baby while enjoying the vacation.

Here’s some travel checklist that you need to prepare:

1. Travel Plan

Before booking a hotel, make sure you first check the hotel facilities provided. Do they provide a heater and bassinet in the room? Don’t forget to check the hotel’s public facilities such as indoor kids playground to anticipate bad weather which might cancel your travel plans.

Next, find out how long the journey takes, including transit time between planes. Nursery room locations at each airport where planes transit. Before leaving, you should make plans about the hotel’s choice, transportation and tourist attractions that you will visit.

2. Check the Weather Forecast

This is also an important thing that you need to pay attention to before you go out of the hotel to always check the weather forecast every morning. The combination of wind and minus temperatures can make the weather much colder than the temperature shown on the thermometer.

Some applications such as Accuweather have RealFeel temperature which shows how cold we feel by factoring in wind, air humidity and sun intensity. Don’t go out if there is a high wind warning.

3. Correct Outfit Layering

Wearing layers in winter is a bit tricky, the most important thing is that the outfit should be able to keep our bodies dry and warm. Wearing not proper materials will make it overheat and the body will be sweaty, and this sweat will lower body temperature. Also wet clothes will make the situation worse if exposed to wind or cold temperatures.

5. Watch the Signs If the Baby is Cold

If your baby feels cold they will usually be quiet, shivering, their skin will look pale and cold as ice. Sneezing is also a sign that they are cold. Go straight to the indoor area and check socks and gloves, take them off immediately if they get wet. Don’t rub reddish parts of their hands, cheeks or feet to speed up the rise in body temperature, because this can make you feel sore and make their skin sore. Let their body temperature rise slowly.

6. Prepare Additional Personal Things

Although it’s just additional, you shouldn’t miss these things, this is an important baby’s need while traveling. The first is warm oil to rub on the baby’s back, stomach, calves and soles of the feet to make them feel warmer. Then also prepare baby lotion, to prevent the baby’s skin from drying out. Lastly, don’t forget to bring their favorite toys to prevent them getting bored during the trip and don’t forget personal medicine for common baby illnesses, such as fever reducer, diarrhea and also a thermometer to measure the child’s body temperature.

We know that taking a baby to travel in winter is not easy. If you think all preparations are well prepared enough but the baby is still fussy or has trouble enjoying the vacation, one thing you need to remember is to always be calm while going through it. Don’t panic.

Baby needs to adapt to the environment and weather changes. Try to always hug them to keep them warm and feel comfy. Gradually, the baby’s body will adapt to the new temperature, so everything will be fine and they eventually will get used to it.
