A wedding planner can help you bring your dream nuptials to life and minimise the amount of stress on your plate in the lead-up to the big day. 40% of couples describe wedding planning as “extremely stressful” but with the right planner on hand, the process can be significantly smoother.

Every wedding planner has their own unique style, skillset, and experience to bring to the table, so it’s important to get to know a planner well before hiring them. Here are four questions to ask your wedding planner to make sure they’re the right one for you.

1. What does your service include?

Wedding planning can take many forms, so it’s important to check what exactly is included in a planner’s service. Some include both planning and management of the event itself, but for small and simple weddings day-of management may not be necessary and you could save money by declining this service.

It’s common to hire a planner after you’ve chosen a venue, but if you’re having trouble with this you could ask a planner to help. Ideally, you should hire a wedding planner between 12 and 18 months before your big day, but you might have to make it closer to 2 years before the wedding if they’ll be helping to source a venue.

2. Do you have preferred vendors?

Wedding planners build up a network of trusted suppliers throughout their career, and their expertise in this area is incredibly valuable. By asking them about their preferred vendors, you can get an idea of their knowledge of the local wedding industry. A good wedding planner is not only well-connected, but they’re also skilled in matching couples with the perfect suppliers so ask if they already have vendors in mind after discussing your ideas with them.

3. How do you charge for your services?

Most wedding planners charge between 10 and 15% of the overall cost of your wedding because the complexity of planning tends to increase the higher the budget is. They may tack on additional fees for extra services or costs, such as transportation and lodgings at the venue if it’s far outside of their local area. It’s rare for a planner to charge a flat rate for their services but not impossible, so be sure to check before you hire them.

4. What is your favourite wedding you have planned?

It’s important to seek insights into a wedding planner’s preferred style so you can see if it matches your dream wedding. For example, if you’re striving for an unconventional wedding, you should avoid hiring a planner who loves the traditional. You can check their portfolio for examples of their past weddings, but by asking about their favourite wedding you can also gain insight into their passion for their preferred style. If they light up when talking about the details of the day, you know you’re onto a good thing.

The perfect planner will give you the perfect wedding

If you’re dreaming of the perfect wedding day, be sure to start with the perfect wedding planner. By asking these four questions you can feel confident that your wedding planner is the right person to be managing your big day.
