What defines a good person is subjective, and it’s impossible and even unfair to consider yourself better or worse than others. If you’re looking to make changes to your life, you must be doing it with good, healthy intentions.

You should never want to change yourself to fit into social norms or to make others like you more. If you’re considering making changes to your appearance, lifestyle, and interest for superficial reasons, this article isn’t for you.

Instead, if you’ve identified that you have some self-destructive habits, are dealing with some issues that you want to get past, or even if you want to begin a journey of self–improvement, then this article can help. Here are a few things to do.

Forgive Yourself

If you want to change because you’ve noticed a negative aspect of yourself that you don’t like, you must make peace with that aspect of yourself and forgive yourself.

For example, many people who hit the gym in an attempt to change their appearance do so from a position of resentment and potential embarrassment, and as they make these changes, they begin to hate the person they used to be. This isn’t a healthy approach as it can make your more beneficial lifestyle changes, such as exercising in this example, feel like a punishment, which can lead to you not sticking with it.

Forgive your past mistakes, understand the flaws you want to fix, and move forward.

Set Goals

When changing yourself for the better, success isn’t instant, and it’s not linear either. This means that there will be road bumps, and each could knock you off course. When trying to break a negative habit, like smoking, people focus on the end goal and forget to set milestones along the way.

By setting smaller goals, such as reducing your cigarette intake from 20 a day to 5, to then having a goal of not smoking for a week, you’ll be able to focus on easier-to-manage tasks.

Plus, as you smash these goals, you’ll expose yourself to more frequent success, which can help motivate you further to push through and continue making your changes.

Find a New Hobby

There’s nothing like finding a hobby that you’re passionate about. It can be something that completely absorbs you and becomes a big part of your life or something that you enjoy doing in your spare time to relax and unwind. Either way, it’s great to have something that you can lose yourself in and enjoy.

So how do you find a hobby? Well, there are lots of ways. You could try something that you’ve always been interested in but never had the chance to pursue, or something that you’ve never even considered but sounds fun and intriguing. There are many options out there, so it’s worth exploring until you find something that clicks with you.

Why not try lock picking? There’s something satisfying about opening a lock with nothing but a simple piece of metal. It’s a skill that takes time and practice to master, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
