Wig styling is important to keep your wig looking its best and wig styling requires as much same care and attention as your natural hair. Currently, synthetic wigs have a built-in memory so only a few basic wig care tips and styling techniques are needed to remind your wig of the desired look and keep it looking its best. Depending on the type of wig you choose, you can style it in a variety of ways to suit your desire. Plus, it’s a great protective style option covering your natural hair from any potential damage, while still giving you the freedom to experiment with all kinds of looks.

As with most things related to beauty these days, you can take your own wig style as long as you are equipped with the right basic tips. Whether you’re going for a sleek, straight hairstyle, or planning to coloring your hair, these are our basic guide to keeping your style in check;

Choose the right wig that suits you

Synthetic wigs require more care in styling because the fibers are fragile and therefore more susceptible to damage.

Styling your wig while it’s on your head allows you to free your style and lets you see how the wig frames your face while you’re styling. There are some helpful tips from Sourcing Nova on how to choose the right wig that suits you.

Style your wig when it’s completely dry

The weight of the water can stretch the fibers of the wig, as well as straighten the curls and damage the original style. Make sure you have time for your wig to dry after washing.

Brush your wig

Styling starts with brushing your wig properly. For synthetic wig fibers, a stainless steel wig brush is recommended to prevent hair loss and stretching of the fibers. For human hair wigs, try with a boar bristle brush. Once you’ve determined the right tool, brush your wig in a way that helps style.

Spray your wig

Spray with a bit of water and use your fingers to smooth out tangles or add a little volume where you need it. It is important not to brush or touch your wig when it is wet from the spray as this will ruin the preset style. Once dry, you can add height to an even area, or reposition your curls using a drawing comb or wig brush. Remember to use wig spray sparingly and especially on areas you have touched.

Try a new look!

If your wig requires cutting, we recommend visiting a hairdresser to choose a new wig hairstyle, coloring, and cut based on your desire looks. Wigs can be shortened, layered, and thinned, and a customized cut can make difference!

Wigs give you the freedom to change your look without putting pressure on your real hair or without actually committing to a style. Keep in mind that even if it’s not your real hair, you’ll still want to take care of it if you want it to look shiny and stay healthy.
